The inspiration for this project originated from an essay written by Bill Joy, a co-founder of Sun Microsystems, back in the early 2000s. Published in
Wiredmagazine under the title "Why the Future Doesn't Need Us," Joy argued that intelligent robots would soon enough replace humanity, particularly in intellectual and social spheres:
“ [...] human race might easily permit itself to drift into a position of such dependence on the machines that it would have no practical choice but to accept all of the machines’ decisions. As society and the problems that face it become more and more complex and machines become more and more intelligent, people will let machines make more of their decisions for them, simply because machine-made decisions will bring better results than man-made ones.
Our experience with technology and computers has made us biased toward it. We tend to perceive technology as neutral, objective, and, many times, superior to us in many domains. Consequently, we are so inclined to accept recommendations provided by technology without any evaluation of its accuracy and limitations. This, we call "overtrust", or as Parasuraman and Riley(1997) define it, Misuse which in their words refers to"over-reliance on automation, which can result in failures of monitoring or decision biases"
